One Person Killed in Accident on I-77S, One Injured, Suspect Arrested:

The Cleveland Division of Police Accident Investigation Unit is currently investigating an accident which occurred on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at approximately 4:30 am. The preliminary investigation reveals that a driver entered the freeway the wrong way driving northbound in the southbound lanes (possibly from Fleet Avenue). The suspect driver’s vehicle collided head on with a second vehicle. One occupant of the second vehicle was pronounced dead on the scene. This crash caused a second crash with a third vehicle, the driver of which was treated for minor injuries. A Cleveland Police vehicle was also struck while on scene, no officers are reporting injuries.

The suspect was placed under arrest and transported by EMS to MetroHealth Medical center for critical injuries. Condition on the suspect is not known at this time. Upon release from the hospital, he will be transported to the Central Prison Unit and booked for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Aggravated Vehicular Assault. Alcohol is believed to be a factor pertaining to the suspect, OVI charges may be issued pending test results.
