Joint Investigation Leads to the Solving of 1984 Homicide

CLEVELAND- Chief of Police Michael McGrath, Deputy Chief Ed Tomba, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty and FBI Special Agent in Charge, Cleveland Division, Stephen Anthony announced a joint investigation that lead to the arrest and charging of defendant Hernandez L. Warren. Warren, 58, was charged with aggravated murder. The case will now be bound over to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office which is expected to seek additional charges from a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury.

On December 6, 1984, 14-year-old Gloria Pointer telephoned her schoolmate to plan walking to school together.   The phone call was made at approximately 7:00 am by Gloria Pointer. By 7:30 am, the waiting friend had left for school without seeing the victim.  The principal of Harry E. Davis School had called the victim’s parents after learning that the victim had not reported to school. Several witnesses had seen the victim walking male following behind her.   The victim’s body was discovered at approximately 10:30 am at the bottom of a fire escape stairwell by an apartment building custodian.

This case has been actively investigated since 1984 by Cleveland Police Homicide Detectives, FBI, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit, and the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department. Hundreds of leads and thousands of man hours have been expended in a determination to find the individual responsible for this crime. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Cold Case Unit opened its investigation in 2007 and requested all items be re-examined and tested.  Since that time several pieces of clothing have been tested resulting in a DNA profile being developed.

A DNA hit came back on April 26, 2013. Upon learning this result and comparing it to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office database, and discovering the DNA matched Defendant Hernandez Warren, a task force was immediately formed to complete the investigation.  Hernandez Warren was subsequently arrested and currently remains in the Cleveland Division of Police Central Prison Unit awaiting a court appearance.

The task force that brought this case to justice includes: Cleveland Police Department: Chief Michael McGrath, Deputy Chief Ed Tomba, Detective Lem Griffin, Lt. Ronald Timm (Homicide Chief) and Detective Bill Conn (ICAC); the FBI; Cuyahoga County Sheriff Frank Bova, Captain Don Michalosky and additional deputy sheriffs. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Criminal Investigations Chief and Director of the Cold Case Unit Richard Bell, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office Investigators Michael J. O’Malley, Jack Bornfeld, Michael Beaman, and recently retired Investigator James Oliver.
