Today it was reported by local media that a Cleveland Police Officer was arrested by the Put-In-Bay Police Department for Disorderly Conduct over the weekend. As a result, an internal investigation was initiated by Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath and within minutes it was found that the arrested officer was not a member of the Cleveland Division of Police. Unfortunately, that fact was not checked before members of the media posted erroneous reports.
When we learn of alleged misconduct by our officers, we investigate it and hold them accountable – if merited. To be clear, there was no misconduct by a Cleveland Police officer in this incident nor should this story harm the reputation of Cleveland Police. Today, the misconduct was perpetrated by the media who failed to check the facts.
