The Cleveland Division of Police Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team is currently investigating a police officer involved shooting that occurred on Monday, December 9, 2013, in the 3200 block of W. 32nd Street.
The preliminary investigation reveals that at approximately 9:30 p.m., a second District one man zone car observed a stolen Dodge minivan operating southbound on W. 32nd Street. At this time the zone car officer followed the stolen vehicle southbound on W. 32nd Street until a Second District Detective car responded to back up the one man zone car. As the officers followed the vehicle it turn into a driveway in the 3200 block of W. 32ND Street and stopped. The driver of the vehicle was ordered out of the vehicle, did not comply and sat in the vehicle. At this time the uniformed officer and detectives exited their vehicles. The uniformed officer approached the suspect vehicle and the suspect suddenly put the vehicle in reverse, accelerated striking the officer’s zone car and nearly hitting the uniformed officer. Subsequent to hitting the zone car the suspect sped forward hitting a bush and a fence. As the suspect vehicle attempted to flee it got stuck on the fence. The suspect vehicle freed itself from the fence and suddenly headed towards one of the detectives. At this time the detective discharged his service weapon at the vehicle approximately four times. The vehicle continue northbound on W. 32nd Street and stopped south of Clark Avenue. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot through the yards. After a short foot pursuit the suspect was apprehended and placed under arrest by assisting officers and detectives.
Once the suspect was taken into custody he was found to have a gunshot wound to the torso. EMS was notified, responded to the scene and conveyed the suspect to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was confined for his injury.
No police officers are reporting injuries at this time.
