Today, Cleveland Division of Police Chief Michael McGrath announced an arrest in the case of 5 year old Jermani Brooks. Cleveland Police, along with members of the Newburgh Heights Police Department arrested 32 year old Geoffrey Gurkovich today in Newburgh Heights.
On Sunday, January 19, 2014, at 11:17pm, officers responded to a shooting in the 12800 block of Crossburn Avenue. Two victims were found, Jermani Brooks and her mother, Noni Brooks, both had gunshot wounds to the head. Jermani Brooks died as a result of her injuries, Noni Brooks remains at MetroHealth Medical Center.
The two victims, along with two other children, ages 8 and 2 months, were seated in a red SUV at the time of the shooting. The two other children were not harmed. The suspect fired shots and then fled in a green SUV. Investigators from the Cleveland Division of Police, along with partnering law enforcement agencies, have worked the case around the clock since the shooting. Gerkovich was tracked to Newburgh Heights where he was seen leaving a house and arrested without incident via traffic stop with assistance from NHPD.
