K-9 Jet: EOW 2-24-14. We will miss you!

K-9 Jet: EOW 2-24-14

The Cleveland Division of Police is sad to announce the passing of one of our police canines.  Jet, a 13 ½ year old black German Shepherd Dog expired today as a result of old age and some medical problems.  He will be greatly missed, especially by his handler, Patrol Officer Antonio Colon.

Jet was born on September 25, 2001 and passed away today, February 24, 2014.  Upon coming to work in the Cleveland Police Canine Unit, he was assigned to Patrol Officer Colon.  Jet was trained in Narcotics detection and spent his days with Officer Colon assisting both Cleveland Police officers, as well as officers of partnering agencies, to perform their duties and take drugs off of the street.

Jet and Officer Colon worked together very well.  The team could always be counted on to report to safety fairs and community events, promoting positive police to citizen interaction.  Jet spent last summer with the children of the City of Cleveland by going to the recreation centers at lunch time for “Pizza with the Police.”  His demeanor was so calm and kind and the children’s faces would just light up when they got to pet him.

Off duty, our canines live with their handlers.  The dogs go home each night with the officers, making the teams inseparable.  The Division of Police will purchase another canine to take over where Jet left off.  That puppy will have some big shoes to fill!  Jet will be honored in a memorial service in the near future.

Rest in peace, dear Jet
