The Cleveland Division of Police is currently investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred on Thursday, March 19th, 2015 at approximately 2:15 am. Preliminary investigation reveals Fifth District officers received a broadcast assignment to respond to 1077 Parkwood in connection with a call for a male breaking into a store at that location.
Upon arriving on scene officers exited their zone car to investigate. While investigating, the officers observed the suspect exit the front door of the store carrying a bag. The officers approached the suspect and a struggle ensued when the two officers attempted to take the suspect into custody. During the struggle one officer fired a shot from his weapon striking the suspect. The officers called for EMS to assist the suspect. The suspect was conveyed to MetroHealth Medical Center by EMS where he expired.
The Cleveland Division of Police Use of Deadly Force Investigation Team (UDFIT) was notified and responded as they do with all officer involved shootings. An assistant from the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office responded as well.
The suspect will be identified by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The officers involved were placed on a 3 day administrative leave.
This matter will continue to be investigated.
