147th Cleveland Police Academy Graduates
On Friday, July 30, 2020, Mayor Frank G. Jackson administered the oath of office to 34 graduates of the 147th Cleveland Police Academy. The graduation ceremony took place at 11am on Mall C and was the first Cleveland Police Academy graduation to be held outdoors. The event was live-streamed on the City of Cleveland’s Facebook page.
A message from Cleveland Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Director of Public Safety Karrie D. Howard and Police Chief Calvin D. Williams:
“Today, we welcome our newest officers to the Cleveland Division of Police. As you step forward on this journey, we know that you will honor your oath to serve the citizens of and visitors to the City of Cleveland with P.R.I.D.E: Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence. Congratulations to the 147th Cleveland Police Academy class.”
The officers were selected following a Civil Service examination for the position of patrol officer. Candidates underwent several tests and a comprehensive background check before being offered conditional employment. As recruits they received over 1,100 hours of instruction in police tactics, criminal law, community diversity, bias-free policing and crisis intervention training. In addition, they received training specifically to prepare them to respond to the needs of the Cleveland Community.
The newly sworn officers will be assigned to one of the five Neighborhood Police Districts across the city.
