New Tip Line Launched

The City of Cleveland stands with the City of Dallas, Texas as those citizens grieve the loss of five officers and the attack on the great city of Dallas.  We pray for the lost, the injured and the family and loved ones who are grieving today.
Currently the Cleveland Division of Police is on a heightened state of awareness for domestic attacks as is law enforcement throughout the country.  Although deployment and staffing is not discussed publicly for tactical reasons, our police officers have received instruction relative to their own safety and to protecting the lives of the citizens we serve every day.
The Cleveland Division of Police relies on support from outside law enforcement agencies at the federal, state and local levels.  Here in Northeast Ohio, we have a strong and united front of entities who work together to create a layered security approach; one that includes both information sharing and partnered efforts.
The Cleveland Division of Police has been heavily involved in the planning process for the Republican National Convention along with our law enforcement partners for over eighteen months.  Throughout this process, information has been gathered, training conducted and best practices implemented.  One of the strongest aspects in effective policing is a strong partnership with the community.  We in law enforcement rely on the eyes and ears of our residents each day.  The public is reminded that everyone needs to do their part.  “If you see something, say something.”
The law enforcement agencies involved in preparing for a safe and secure community and activities surrounding the Republican National Convention have set up a designated tip line for the public to utilize for suspicious information or activity to be reported.  This tip line number is 1-800-225-5324.

What is the RNC tip line?

What is suspicious activity?

We have our routines every day, going to work, going to school, interacting in our neighborhoods and our communities when we see something that doesn’t fit – we notice. We need the public’s assistance in reporting things that do not fit, things that are out of the ordinary.

Examples could include:
A vehicle parked in an odd location, a package/luggage that is unattended, a window/door that usually is closed and now it is open, or any other out of the ordinary situations.

A person questioning individuals at a level beyond curiosity.Someone paying an unusual amount of attention to buildings beyond a casual or professional interest, about the buildings operations, security procedures and/or personnel, shift changes, etc.
Extended loitering without explanation
Unusual repeated or prolonged observation of buildings, sketching floor plans, taking photographs, etc.

Should the public report information regarding statements made by people?
Individuals stating or posting that they intend to commit violence in our community against other people or against property are encouraged to report that information to this tip line. It is law enforcement’s job to determine if people making statements about committing violence are credible or not. Law enforcement cannot act on the threat of violence if it is not reported.

Law enforcement agencies are challenged every day to balance the civil liberties of U.S. citizens against the need to investigate activities of possible criminal conduct. No matter how offensive to some, we are keenly aware that expressing views by itself is not a crime and the protections afforded under the Constitution cannot be compromised.
We are providing information so that when people in the community notice something suspicious or they hear someone stating intentions of committing violence they recognize the matter may be something they should report…the public should utilize our Cleveland/RNC tip line at 1-800-225-5324
Law enforcement does not predicate investigative activity solely on the exercise of First Amendment rights, including freedom of religion, or on race or ethnicity.
